Stanford Overtakes Yale for Top U.S. Law School

U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 U.S. law school rankings place Stanford Law School in the top spot over Yale Law School.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Yale as the top U.S. law school for 36 years since the inception of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Since 2023, however, Yale and Stanford were tied for the top spot in the rankings. Stanford now occupies the top spot alone. Yale is now tied with the University of Chicago Law School for the number 2 ranking. Cornell Law School jumped five spots to re-enter the top 14 law schools. Vanderbilt Law School saw a two ranking bump, while other schools within the 2026 top 14 saw no change or a plus or minus one change. The University of California, Berkeley School of Law dropped from the top 14 law schools to rank 16. Georgetown University Law Center also fell from the top 14 down to rank 18.

The ranking methodology from U.S. News & World Report heavily weigh employment at 33%. First-time bar passage (18%), peer assessment, (12.5%), and lawyer/judge assessment (12.5%) also play large roles in the methodology, while other factors make up a smaller portion of the methodology. This year, 94.9% of Yale graduates entered long-term, full-time employment requiring or benefiting from a law degree within 10 months of graduation. This number is down from 95.5% in 2025. A spokesperson for Yale Law School said that the school is “focused on providing a rigorous and excellent legal education and increasing access and opportunity to law school and the profession.”

U.S. News & World Report changed its ranking methodology four years ago. Some elite schools, including Yale and Berkeley, claimed the prior ranking methodology hurt student diversity and affordability. In response, U.S. News & World Report shifted to focus on data reported by law schools to the American Bar Association. As such, small shifts in bar passage and employment rates can cause large shifts in the rankings since the top schools often see similar outcomes in those two areas.
