Candidates sitting for the February 2025 California bar examination secured a settlement for $1.35 milllion from the software company that administered the test.
ProctorU, Inc., doing business as Meazure Learning, developed the platform that administered the bar exam. February 2025 examinees paid a $153 laptop fee to use Meazure’s platform. The bar exam in question was the first instance where the California bar exam was administered both in person and online. Examinees complained about significant logistical and technical issues, including server issues, broken ability to cut and paste, issues with proctors, and ineffective tech support. Some examinees noted receiving confusing and contradictory information from Meazure and the State Bar of California.
The failed administration of the bar exam prompted affected examinees to file a class action lawsuit against Meazure in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The parties reached settlement in August 2026, but the specific terms of the settlement were noted in the Notice of Motion and Motion for Preliminary Approval of Class Action Settlement filed on Friday, September 18, 2026. The $1.35 million settlement permits anyone who files a claim to receive at least $153, representing the laptop fee paid by examinees. The seven named plaintiffs will each receive $10,000. Plaintiffs’ attorneys are projected to receive $450,000 and nearly $28,000 in litigation costs. Unclaimed funds will go to the California Lawyers Foundation. Judge Jon S. Tigar will consider the preliminary agreement at a hearing set for January 7, 2027.
