US Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020 at the age of 87 due to complications of metastatic cancer of the pancreas. Serving on the nation’s highest court for 27 years, she was known for her role in advancing equality and legal rights related to gender.
Highlights of Justice Ginsburg’s early career included becoming Columbia University’s first female tenured professor, founding the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project, and arguing six cases before the US Supreme Court. She was appointed to the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter, where she served for 13 years. In 1993, she was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the US Senate to serve on the US Supreme Court.
A contentious political battle regarding who will succeed Justice Ginsburg on the Court is expected to ensue in light of her role as part of the Court’s liberal voting bloc, particularly against the backdrop of the upcoming presidential election.
In honor of Justice Ginsburg, Justia has compiled a list of the opinions she authored. For a list of cases she argued before the Court as an advocate, see her page on Oyez.
